ABOUT ME

My name is Derrick Parsons and I am a photographer. When I was little and my family went on a trip I always used my allowance to buy a disposable film camera. I still have pictures I took as a kid from Glacier National Park to Costa Rica.

I really started to grow my knowledge of photography in high school. I took more photography classes than we actually had, taking independent study courses my senior year. When I got to UW Madison I quickly added a photography certificate to my schedule before I actually figured out what my major was. I definitely don't know everything, and I am learning more techniques every day.

I don't have one favorite thing to photograph. I am having way too much fun exploring all forms of photography right now. I've enjoyed my documentary and narrative classes as much as my fine art classes. For now I just want to keep taking pictures.

At UW Madison I tried out for the Marching Band my freshman year. I learned so much from my four years in the band. You have to learn to love the process of getting better. I was horrible my first year. I practiced all off-season, and by my second year I was on the field for every show. There are so many life lessons that come from band; teamwork, leadership, work ethic, and perseverance. I'd give anything to put that Uniform on again.

At this time my dream job would be working for a company like National Geographic. I would love to travel and document our world. There are so many things that I want see and document for our future generations to see. National Geographic does a great job of showing a story in a way that people can see and feel. They go beyond telling the viewer, they'll show the story in a way that you can really feel what is going on.
